I've driven by and was scared to stop in because it is run down and you never know what kind of people would be running it. Always the same old run down vehicles are always parked out front and I thought they were kept out there to make people believe they were busy. But, I'm not even sure these vehicles run. Then I thought well maybe they do and there's some weird hillbillies that run the place that I'd be scared of. So I never stopped. The other day I drove in. I stopped in front of the door and couldn't tell if they were open or not. I finally decided to park and got out. I started walking by little garden statutes outside that was being sold and I was in memory lane. I walked in and an old guy, "91 years old" runs the place. He's old, the place is old, the place is piled high with stuff, it's dirty, dusty, musty, dark and dingy. The old guy appears to be a grouch until he opens his mouth and says, "I'm practically deaf and I'm not ignoring you. If you need something come let me know because I won't hear you. I'm 91, been in WWII. Just ask if you need help". He then commenced to sit on a high stool behind the counter, open his paper, propped his legs up on the counter, and leaned back like he was 13. Then I began looking and I no longer cared about the looks of the place, the smell of the place, or the dust on the merchandise. I don't care, I'd clean it anyway. I love this place! He was helpful when I needed it, left me alone otherwise, and if he pulls a gun on anyone they probably deserve it. We could probably all learn a lot from this man. I hope he stays open and dread the day that it doesn't.
I'm glad we finally stopped in!
Yeah, the place looks a bit run down from the outside. The shop owner was a real Ozarks historian though. Graduated from Camdenton. His girls (now in their 60's) went to school in the "Old red brick building." He's a WWII vet. He's in the Dogwood parade every year. Photos of Lake history all over the shop... I enjoyed just chatting with him. He told us he's been running the place for 70 years!
Nicest old man in the world. Never shot at us once.
I have driven by this place since I was a kid and never stopped in. Half of the store was typical Lake Area gift shop fare. The other half is filled walls and ceilings with the shop's namesake. Every sort of basket you can imagine. My daughter picked up 2 duck shaped ones, under $4 a pc and super cute! I got this gorgeous wood platter that looks like it came straight out of the 70's.
Awesome awesome stuff.
Look at his Facebook page.
Yes the store is old and yes the merchandise is a bit dusty. Its been open for 70 years and is operated by a man in his 90s. The merchandise is from a bygone era that you aren't likely to ever see again. Major credit cards ARE accepted and the previous poster who claims that a gun was pulled is full of BS. Davis Baskets is well worth the stop.
I recommend you do not shop at this awful side of the road junk store. If you do find something after knocking layers of dust off of it you may be surprised to know that unless you have cash your major cc is not accepted here. The owner will also insult you if you decide to shop else where and pull a gun on his patrons. Stay far away from this junk hole. Ozark land sells same stuff cheaper.
